What is an Algal Bloom? Algal bloom is caused when too many phosphates build up in the water. Phosphates are in detergents and fertilizer. It makes water green and hard to see through. When those plants die off, bacteria eats the dying plants and takes away Dissolved Oxygen from the water, which fish need to survive. [1] Algal blooms can occur in both fresh water enviorments, and marine/salt water enviorments.[3]
